Give Thanksgiving a Healthy Hug

by Maryann Pisano on November 23, 2011

Pies, potatoes, hams, oh my!  With so many delicious foods on Thanksgiving, indulging in nearly 2,000 calories in one sitting is easy.  Luckily, personal trainer and nutritionist Megan Vaccaro gave emme some options and tips to keeping your holiday meal low-calorie and healthy.

White Meat

Instead of eating dark meat, opt for white meats such as chicken or turkey breast.  White meat is lower in calories and healthier.

Pumpkin Pie and Apple Pie

over…

French Silk Pie and Pecan Pie

A slice of pumpkin pie contains 180 calories, while pecan pie is nearly 480!  That is quite a difference.  Pumpkin pie and apple pie are healthier options than French Silk Pie, which is mostly sugar and cream.

Watch out for…

Gravy, Butter, Dressing

Unfortunately, with Thanksgiving comes mounds of gravy.  A 1/2 cup of gravy is 150 calories, and 1 pat of butter is 45 calories.  Vaccaro suggests to steer clear of sauces, which come with several side dishes.  Be smart with what condiments you put on top of your food!
