Summer is the time to kick back and relax at the pool or beach. What time of year is better to dig into a juicy summer read? Vanessa Morrison, a librarian from Franklin Park Library gave the scoop on the trendiest books in demand this summer.
When it comes to women’s literature, aka “chick lit,” popular books include Summer Breeze by Nancy Thayer. This book is about three women who create a unique bond one summer on New England’s Dragonfly Lake. It is the perfect read for those looking for a heart-warming girlfriend book. Wallflower in Bloom by Claire Cook, tells the story of Deirdre Griffin who is a personal assistant to her New Age guru brother, Tag. Deirdre decides to use her brother’s online following to get herself voted onto Dancing with the Stars. The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner is about a young screen writer trying to make it in Hollywood, but like all things, her dream isn’t turning out the way she planned.
As for young adults, the Hunger Games novels are still very in demand. “Even though the movie came out in March, the Hunger Games novels are always being checked out,” Morrison said. The books, written by Suzanne Collins, take place in a futuristic world run by the government (the Capitol.) Each year, the Capitol has the reality show the Hunger Games which young children are chosen to fight to the death. Katniss Everdeen (the main character) is chosen from her district to compete in the games. Other young adult books include Rapture by Lauren Kate and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Rapture is the fourth and final book in the Fallen book series. The Fault in Our Stars is a love story about a couple who both have cancer.
If you are looking for cook books to try new eats, Morrison suggests Martha Stuwart’s Martha’s American Food. The cook book consists of typical American dishes that are great for the 4th of July or a summer barbeque. If you are a fan of the Bravo show Real Housewives of New Jersey, cast member Teresa Giudice has a new cook book called Fabulicious!: Fast and Fit. Giudice writes about low-fat, Italian dishes.
According to Morrison, popular books for men include The Family Corleone by Ed Falco and The Waters by Jon Steele. If your husband or boyfriend is a fan of The Godfather, then they will love The Family Corleone. This novel is a prequel to Mario Puzo’s The Godfather.
If you enjoy adult fiction books, Morrison recommends Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian. And, if your elementary school child would like a pool read, Morrison suggests The Last Guardian by Eoin Colfer.
