Diego De Astis is living the American dream! De Astis was born in Bari, Italy and immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was 10-years old. In 1972, he began working at an Italian deli when he was 16. From working there, he knew that owning a business was what he wanted to do with his life.
In 1984, De Astis and his brothers established their own deli in Chicago. When their business had grown in popularity, they reopened their deli at a bigger location in Bensenville. De Astis and his brothers, John, Nick, and Mario all live in the Chicago area and help out in different aspects of the business. “We became popular through word of mouth,” De Astis said. “People like our sandwiches.” All of Asti Italian Deli’s foods are made with fresh cheeses, meats and breads. Yum!
De Astis expanded Asti Italian Deli even further by teaming with United Airlines. Asti Italian Deli provides the meals for the international flights. De Astis owns a plant in Italy that creates the meals for the airlines. The next time you hop on a plane to Italy, you can eat a delicious meal from Asti Italian Deli! Steve Dolinsky even featured Asti Italian Deli on ABC7.
“It was my mother’s dream to see her boys working together,” De Astis said. “We were determined to make it happen.” De Astis feels owning your own business is financially rewarding, but it can be a lot of work. He encourages young entrepreneurs to follow their dream and work hard. With hard work, passion and determination, anyone can live the American dream.
