It’s Fat Tuesday! On the day before Ash Wednesday, people enjoy the Polish doughnuts called paczki. Polish immigrants pronounce it “pooch-key” or “punch-key.” Paczki were originally made to use up some of the foods that were prohibited during Lent. Today, we eat them as a once a year treat. In English, paczki means “little package.”
Each Country calls it something different:
Germany — Berliner
Austria — Krapfen
Romania — Gogosi
Ukraine — Pampushky
Hawaii — Malasada
What Emme readers are giving up for Lent:
1. Sweets
2. Alcohol/ Pop
3. Fast food/ nail biting/ social media
