I was in the Army. I was deployed to Afghanistan from April of 2011 through April 2012. So, I was away for both Christmas and Thanksgiving. It was really sad. I think the hardest was having to spend Christmas overseas by myself. However, the people that you serve with become your family. They’re going through the same stuff that you’re going through. A lot of military personnel use Skype. That gives us the ability to communicate with our family and see each other. It’s a 20 hour difference as far as time zone goes. I saw my daughter opening up her presents via Skype with my family in the background. It’s very sad, but fighting overseas allows your family to enjoy themselves so they don’t have to deal with what we’re dealing with.
On Christmas Day, the government did a lot for us. We had a feast. We all came together as one big family. We were able to watch TV. We didn’t have to worry about going on missions. We had some downtime and talk amongst each other and hear about each other’s families.
It was difficult being away from my family, but I don’t regret my four years of service to this country.
Being deployed to a third world country, you see poverty. People don’t realize how great this country is. A lot of people over there die because they don’t have food or water. We’re fighting so these people can better their lives.
