- At age 16, St. Patrick was captured by Irish raiders and spent 6 years in captivity
- He converted to Christian, and returned to Ireland to be a Christian missionary
- He died on March 17, 461
- It is said that he rid all of the snakes out of Ireland, and turned the country Christian
- It is also said that he used a shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity
- As a result, people in 18th century Ireland began wearing shamrocks on March 17, to signify that they were Irish and Christian
- Later, they began wearing green
- The first parade happened in New York in 1762
