On March 8, 1952, Marilyn Monroe met Joe DiMaggio at Villa Nova, an Italian restaurant which is now The Rainbow Bar and Grill on Sunset Boulevard.  DiMaggio wasn’t attractive, but something about him fascinated Monroe.  They drove around Beverly Hills for three hours that day.  She giggled to friends that “Joe was great in bed.”

DiMaggio fell madly in love with Monroe, and they got married on Jan. 15, 1954.  The press called it the “Marriage of a Century.”  Sadly, just nine months after their wedding, they divorced on Oct. 27, 1954.  But even after their divorce, DiMaggio remained Monroe’s rock.  He tried to get her away from detrimental people, and tried to bring her back from depression and drugs.

On Aug. 1, 1962, he asked Monroe to remarry him, but she was found dead on Aug. 5, 1962.  He was the only one to take possession of her body, and planned funeral services for her.  He had half- dozen roses delivered three times a week to her crypt for 20 years.  DiMaggio never spoke about their relationship to the media, and he never married again. His dying words were, “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.”
