Do varicose veins run in your family? Whether they do or not, varicose veins are those nasty veins that appear to be “popping” out of the leg. Here are some ways to avoid getting varicose veins:
- Exercise. Running or walking is a way to encourage blood circulation in your legs. So, get moving!
- Watch Your Weight. When there’s excess weight on your body, this causes pressure on your veins. Eating healthy, low-salt meals will help with reducing water retention.
- Sorry, girls. Ditch the Heels. Wearing flat shoes will work calf muscles more, which is better for your veins. Avoid tight clothing around your legs because that can reduce blood flow.
- Elevate your legs. Make sure to elevate your legs above the level of your heart. You can do this by propping them up on a wall or with several pillows.
- Avoid Long Periods of Sitting or Standing. Make sure to change your position so your blood can continue flowing in your legs.
- DON’T CROSS YOUR LEGS! Crossing your legs can eliminate circulation in the legs, causing varicose veins.
