There is a theory that Valentine’s Day is a Christianized version of the Roman holiday of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a fertility festival honoring Faunus, who was an agricultural god.
Festivities included dancing and matching making ceremonies.
Girls and young women would receive soft lashes made from specially-made leather whips, that they believed would help with fertility in the coming year.
