It’s wedding season! But, before you catch the bouquet and taste the cake, find out the reasons behind these most popular wedding traditions:
- The Ring — Ancient Egyptians believed that the vein in the third finger of the left hand ran directly to the heart. Today, it’s considered our ring finger, and it’s we where we wear our engagement rings and wedding bands. The shape of the ring, a circle, represents never-ending love. Aw!
- Flowers — Flowers represent emotions. Roman brides carried bunches of herbs to represent fidelity and fertility and to ward off evil. The Greeks carried ivy as a sign of love.
- The Wedding Party — Many years ago, the groom’s friends helped him kidnap the bride and defended him against anyone who wanted to steal her. In later years, the bride traveled to her groom’s village with escorts, aka bridesmaids. They protected her dowry and against suitors.
- The Kiss — You may kiss the bride! The Romans believed a kiss was a legal bond that sealed the relationship. It was also believed that after a couple kissed, part of each of their souls were exchanged.
- White — The Romans believed white was a color of celebration. Today, it symbolizes purity.
