What’s the Difference Between Google Hangouts and Zoom? #Quarantine

by Maryann Pisano on May 11, 2020

We’ve been social distancing since mid-March, so chatting with friends online has become the new normal. People more than ever have been talking via Zoom or Google Hangouts. Find out the difference between the two the next time you need to chat with your pal or need to coordinate a work meeting:

Number of Participants:

  • Google Hangouts allows up to 150 in a chat. However, it limits its video calls to only 25 people per call.
  • Zoom allows users to have up to 100 participants in a video call. For the Large Meeting add-on, ($50 a month) you can have up to 500 people.

Price:

  • Google Hangouts is free, however for $6 a month you can purchase 30 GB of storage to keep records of your meetings.
  • Zoom has different packages depending on their features. Zoom is free for unlimited meetings up to 100 participants. For a pro account, it is $14.99 per host.

Time Limit:

  • Google Hangouts doesn’t have any known time limits based on the length of calls.
  • Zoom has a time limit if you are using its Free package. The calls under the Free package can only last up to 40 minutes. A pro account or anything more expensive moves the limit up to a 24-hour duration.
